Dispersion in hazardous areas
Combustible and potentially explosive substances such as gases, vapours or mist may occur in many areas of the chemical industry, in particular in the paint, ink and coating industry. The operating company must carry out a risk assessment to identify EX category zones relating specifically to the operation of the intended dispersion equipment. A zone plan must be prepared within the scope of the preparation of explosion‒protection documents for the use of machines in these hazardous areas.
The zone division is based on the probability and frequency of a potentially explosive atmosphere and includes 3 zones. The DIN EN 60079-10 European standard provides support for the zonal classification. Refer to the 1999/92/EC Directive for a definition of the zones.
According to this classification, the resulting device category for the dispersion machine to be used can be determined.
Among others, this is a requirement for the selection of an explosion‒proof dissolver or a bead mill.
